Easter / “Semana Santa” in Antigua, Guatemala is a unique cultural and religious event. Thousands of people come from all over the world to experience some of the festivities, which begin at Ash Wednesday and continue through Easter Sunday.
Processions leave from various churches and wind their way though Antigua while residents and guests create carpets / “alfombras” made from colored sawdust, flower petals, and a variety of other creative items. Each one is unique and prepared especially for the procession to walk over as they carry the Christ figure overhead.

The procession starts with a few people in the early evening and along the route, more and more people join until a large crowd is walking together through the streets seeking shelter. People carry lanterns or candles protected by colorful cellophane and sing traditional songs while knocking on doors requesting entrance – much like Mary and Joseph did.Read More
